Papers of the Cox and Chesnut families, 1792-1858, (bulk: 1796-1814).

Chiefly letters addressed to Mary Cox Chesnut (1775-1864), wife of planter James Chesnut (1773-1866), owner of Mulberry plantation near Camden, S.C., and a leader in public and governmental affairs in the area. Letters written primarily from Mary Chesnut's native Philadelphia, Pa., discuss medical treatments and child mortality, as well as social practices associated with courtship, engagement, and marriage. Correspondents include Chesnut's mother, Esther Bowes Cox (1740- 1814) of Philadelphia, and her sisters, Rachel, wife of John Stevens, developer of an early steam engine, of Hoboken, N.J.; Elizabeth (b. 1783), wife of Horace Binney (1780-1875), lawyer and director of the first Bank of the United States; Esther (Hetty), wife of Matthias Barton; Sarah (b. 1779) (Sally), wife of physician and educator John Redman Coxe (1773-1864); and Catherine, wife of Samuel Stockton and the Rev. Nathaniel Harris. Collection also contains will of Esther Bowes Cox.
